Three pedestrians were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after they were hit by a car in a crosswalk Friday afternoon in Seattle’s University District, according to the Seattle Police Department (SPD).

Police said the driver fled the scene in the vehicle after the hit-and-run. Officers have found and taken a suspect into custody but are still working to confirm that person is the driver responsible.

Around 1:30 p.m., Seattle police responded to the reported hit-and-run 15th Avenue Northeast between Northeast 45th Street and Northeast 47th Street.

Multiple witnesses told KOMO News crews at the scene the victims were in the crosswalk when they were hit by a speeding vehicle that ran a red light.

“I don’t know where the car came from but a car flew by, and the bus driver honked on the horn,” Lily Fisher, who was on a metro bus in the area, said. “When I got out of the bus, it took me a second to realize what had happened and I saw three people extremely critically injured on the ground.”

Crews began treating the three people at the scene of the collision before paramedics transported them to the hospital for additional care.
