Two people are in custody after allegedly carjacking two individuals and leading police on a pursuit through Kent that ended in south King County.

The incident started around 12:30 p.m. when officers with the Kent Police Department responded to a report of a stolen White Escalade. The King County Sheriff’s Office helicopter Guardian One was in the area and helped police locate the stolen vehicle at a convenience store. When officers arrived at the scene, the driver took off, but officers were “unable to pursue due to legislative restrictions,” according to police.

King County deputies kept track of the vehicle from the air with Guardian One and continued to give police on the ground updates. The vehicle ended up striking another vehicle and then continued to flee. The driver of the Escalade then ditched the car and carjacked a red Ford Explorer, police said.

The suspect driver, identified by the KPD as a 26-year-old Kent man, took off in the Ford Explorer and his passenger, a 24-year-old woman, followed him after jumping into the driver’s seat of the Escalade.

2:13 Eugene Wasserman is a number cruncher and a long-time Seattleite who values responsiveness. He’s the guy who co-sponsored the 2013 ballot referendum that led to council district elections, with the idea that they would be more likely to respond to community needs.

Wasserman stood in front of the Seattle City Council on Tuesday, Feb. 13, urging this new set of elected leaders to deal with public safety concerns more urgently.

“I’m not litigating the past, I’m telling you what you have to look forward to,” said Wasserman, representing the North Seattle Industrial Association. “There a ticking time bomb here.”

Wasserman was referring to how crime and drug dealing have impacted his association’s members and the need for urgency. He also disagreed with the Seattle Police Department assessment that property crime has gone down in the past year.
