Residents and businesses in Capitol Hill were asked to close their windows and doors to prevent smoke from entering Friday morning amid a vacant-building fire.

The Seattle Fire Department first posted about the fire — located on the 1700 block of Belmont Avenue — at 4:32 a.m. The SFD said 20 minutes later that the building was all clear, and crews transitioned to a defensive position as the roof was at risk of collapsing.

Crews upgraded the burn to a two-alarm fire because it “extended to the building behind the vacant structure.” The fire was under control by 8:45 a.m.

Photos and video from the scene show heavy smoke and flames.

David Cuerpo of the SFD said multiple 911 calls came in before 4:30 a.m. reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the 3 1/2-story apartment building in the Capitol Hill/First Hill area. The fire extended to an occupied apartment building just west, and firefighters knocked that one down before fighting the initial fire from a defensive position on the roofs of adjacent buildings.

No injuries were reported,Cuerpo said, adding that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
