On November 20, 1965, amidst the annual matchup between storied rivals Mount Hermon School and Deerfield Academy, a fire breaks out behind the football field. Peter Weis ’78, Jay Ward ’68 and football co-captain Jim Van Fleet ’66 (whose father, Robert Van Fleet, took the infamous photo) walk us through the events leading up to and following the Silliman Fire, how it impacted those involved, and how one photograph, which is now world-famous, became a cultural symbol of “priorities” among the sports world.
NFL Films Presents: Playing with Fire, aired on Fox Sports 1, 10/23/15.
