INCIDENT DESCRIPTION
At around 6:28 pm on November 28, 2023, the Seattle Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at Rainier Ave. S & S Genesee St. Crews found a working fire at 4208 Rainier Ave. S, at the Rainier Mall North. The 33,000 square-foot mall, which became completely vacant in 2016, formerly housed Jumbo Seafood Restaurant and Lounge, a local Chinese restaurant, and Boss Bar. At around 6:36 pm, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm. A picture from SFD’s PIO from 6:37 pm shows a column of gray smoke pouring from the roof of the building. Another Twitter update was given at 7:19 pm, and the smoke column now glowed orange. By 7:38 pm, huge flames were visible from the building, and around 7:55 pm, the building’s facade collapsed. The fire was brought under control by 9:32 pm. One firefighter was injured and was transported by Aid 10 in stable condition. The cause of the fire has not been publicly released. The incident lasted approximately four hours, but some firefighters stayed for much longer to ensure the fire did not reignite.
