From cell phones to laptops, digital cameras to power drills, many products now rely on lithium-ion batteries. These potent cells provide plenty of punch but can also be extremely dangerous. The Seattle Fire Department says it deals with about ten calls a month involving lithium-ion batteries. Small explosions and fires caused by the batteries are difficult to extinguish. Experts have this warning: if the batteries become unusually hot or begin to swell, they’re starting to fail and could pose a risk.
