WSDOT said it will enforce an “emergency closure” of a long-standing encampment on Dearborn between 10th and 12th after a series of fires and after getting pressed by KOMO News.

Late Sunday, another fire erupted at the state-owned land near I-5 on the ramp. Two Seattle engines were dispatched to put out the flames.

It was the 14th reported fire on the property since January of this year and the fourth in a month, according to Seattle Fire Department records.

1:26 Neighbors call it a “nuisance on wheels”; in a day, a homeless RV in Ballard was the scene of both a SWAT standoff as well as a suspicious fire.

Parked at a growing RV homeless encampment, neighbors said that “activity” amped up to worrying new levels between Nov. 22 and Nov. 23.

It started with a SWAT standoff inside one of the parked RVs, where a woman armed herself with a gun and refused to come out. Several hours passed before she surrendered. Less than 24 hours later, emergency crews rushed to that same RV; this time for a large fire that raced through the entire vehicle.

“This is probably the fifth RV explosion since I’ve worked here,” said one neighbor.

3:12 Frigid temperatures are playing havoc with the local homeless population, but there is a new layer of help being extended in Tacoma. City officials have partnered with several nonprofits to expand shelter bed capacity on bitterly cold nights.

To help with this situation, 170 additional emergency beds have been added in Tacoma with the help of three agencies. Tacoma Rescue Mission has added overflow capacity at Holy Rosary Church. There are enough seasonal beds for 50 men and women to stay overnight.

Catholic Community Services Nativity House in Tacoma is making room for another 80 beds. However, Nativity House still had about 50 unused beds this past weekend. The overflow shelter at Holy Rosary Church campus had about 15 beds that went unfilled.

Some homeless worry they will catch COVID-19 or other illnesses by going back inside, so they stick to the streets. Others say they have a hard time with shelter rules.
